Tau Laukonga

The first reading apps built for the Kingdom of Tonga. Available in English and Tongan, Tau Laukonga (“Let’s Read”) is a force multiplier for efforts to improve literacy rates for both languages within the country and the Tongan diaspora abroad. Each app features 110+ fun, culturally-relevant books.

About

The app project, a Friends of Tonga initiative, was led and developed by United States Peace Corps Volunteer Andrew Pavey and endorsed by the Tonga Ministry of Education and Training (MET) and the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga Education System. Dozens of supporters representing Tonga, the United States, and New Zealand, including current and former Peace Corps Volunteers, gave their time and energy to narrate books, translate the user interface, and more.

Over 70% of Tongan households lack reading materials for kids, according to a 2017 World Bank report. With Tau Laukonga, all families can help their children get better at reading at no cost and without the need for a consistent internet connection.
